Nitecore CI7 White & Infrared LED Torch

£129.90

The Nitecore CI7 Chameleon features a white light with a maximum output of 2500 lumens from 4 x Cree XP-G3 S3 LEDs, plus an Infrared beam with a maximum output of 7000 mW and a wavelength of 940 nm from 4 x SST-10-IR LEDs.

It also features the upgraded 2nd generation Strobe Ready dual button interface, that has a strobe ready pedal design inset into the tail cap more to prevent accidental activation, while still enabling fast and easy access to the strobe, mode changing and other outputs even when wearing gloves, making it a perfect tactical torch with true single handed operation.

Due to the high output, the CI7 requires a rechargeable lithium-ion 18650 high drain battery like the Nitecore NL1835HP or a rechargeable lithium-ion IMR18650. The battery needs to have a high discharge current of at least 8 A in order to work. The CI7 can also use two CR123A lithium metal non rechargeable batteries or two rechargeable RCR123A lithium-ion batteries however the turbo setting is unavailable if you are using these batteries.

Five brightness levels and strobe are available from the four white LEDs, and the four infrared LEDs offer a choice of either a high 7 W output, mid 3 W output or a low 1 W output. The torch can be used with either the white LEDs activated or the infrared LEDs activated, and they are changed by pushing the head of the CI7 forward and rotating the head, which swaps between the two sets of LEDs and aligns the chosen LEDs with the reflector.

With the infrared LEDs selected, the light is turned on and off with the circular tail cap button, which can also be half pressed to provide momentary illumination until it is released. Once turned on single press the mode button (strobe ready lever) to cycle low, mid, high infrared outputs and the setting will be remembered next time the torch is turned on. Momentary high is accessed by holding down the mode button while the light is on, and once released the light will return to the previous setting.

With the white LEDs selected, the light is turned on and off with the circular tail cap button, which can also be half pressed to provide momentary illumination until it is released. Once turned on single press the mode button (strobe ready lever) to cycle ultra-low, low, mid, high, turbo and the setting will be remembered next time the torch is turned on.

The white settings also offer two user modes of either daily mode or tactical mode. All five white brightness levels are available in both modes, but daily mode offers momentary access to turbo, while tactical mode offers direct access to strobe. In daily mode with the light on, press and hold the mode button to momentarily access the turbo and release to return to the previous setting. In tactical mode with the light on, press and hold the mode button until the strobe is activated and this will then stay on constantly until you quick press the mode button again.

To change between daily and tactical modes, firstly ensure the torch is off and then loosen the tail cap. Press and hold the mode button while tightening the tail cap again and the torch will then blink once to show daily mode or blink twice to show tactical mode has been activated.

A power indicator on the tail will show the battery voltage when it is first inserted, for example if the voltage is 4.2 V the light will flash four times, pause and then flash two more times. The integrated advance temperature regulation (ATR) technology regulates the output of the CI7 according to the working condition and ambient environment to maintain the optimal performance.

Torch performance

Really good - much smaller and lighter than my out of production EA81 (which succumbed to one drop too many from height) but with near equal performance - battery hasn't quite got the power and duration of x8 NiMh eneloope pro's but the gains in weight and size outweigh this. I use it for bat and bird finding survey work. It would get a five if the beam could be focused down to be more narrow and intense. Not used it for any IR work yet.
