Nitecore UT32 Dual Colour Temperature LED Head Torch

£79.98

The Nitecore UT32 is the first coaxial dual output head torch in the industry and offers both a cool white and warm white output from two LEDs, and is specially designed for trail running, but is equally useful for other outdoor activities.

Unlike a traditional hand torch, the light does not come from the end of the torch and instead comes from the side of the torch, with each output on either side, making the UT32 a versatile unit. It can be used as a head torch with the included hollow headband, which is lightweight, breathable and features reflective strips around the band to increase visibility. The ergonomic design ensures the light is balanced within the bracket to provide optimised stability when running.

It can also easily be used in the hand, or when attached to a shirt pocket with the included clip the light is perfectly pointing outwards from the body so it can be used hands free.

One side features a Cree XP-L2 V6 cool white LED with a maximum output of 1100 lumens and a colour temperature of 5700 K, and the reverse side features a Cree XP-L V6 warm white LED with a maximum output of 920 lumens and a colour temperature of 3000 K. The clever design allows the torch to be rotated 180° within the bracket so you can quickly and easily change which LED is forward facing, and the dual button design lets you switch between the light outputs with a simply press of the opposite button to what is already turned on.

The cool white light is equipped with a textured orange peel reflector that is precisely calculated to provide a consistent beam and eliminate the central hotspot, resulting in a balanced 100° wide angle flood beam that covers your field of vision. This combined with the truevision technology, which provides a simulation of natural sunlight, greatly eases eye fatigue thus making it perfect for trail runners, hikers and anyone who needs to clearly see the path to ensure careful foot placement.

The warm white light in contrast has a smooth reflector and precision digital optics technology that is designed to throw the beam, and provides much better penetration ability through rain, snow or fog than that of a cool white beam in comparison, ensuring you'll be ready for any weather conditions.

It is powered by a single button top 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery, two CR123A non rechargeable batteries or two 16430 lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. A built-in battery voltage indicator will display battery voltage each time the battery is installed and the tail cap is tightened. For example if the voltage is 4.2 V, it will flash four times then pause and then flash two more times.

The integrated advance temperature regulation (ATR) technology regulates the output of the UT32 according to the working condition and ambient environment to maintain the optimal performance.

How to Operate

Two separate buttons control the cool white and warm white outputs and sit either side of the LEDs. To distinguish between the two, the cool white button (A) has a small raised circle in the centre and the warm white button (B) is flat. Hold down both buttons to turn the light on in cool white low and then single press button A to cycle low, mid and high. To change from cool white to warm white, simply press button B with the light on, and it will change to the warm white light at the equivalent output level. Single presses of button B will then cycle through low, mid and high.

Turbo is accessed in search mode for 30 seconds before returning to the previous output by pressing and holding button A or B, and constant cool white turbo is accessed from off by pressing and holding both buttons and continuing to hold after low cool white has come on. The special modes are accessed from off by triple pressing either button A for cool white or button B for warm white, and once on single presses of the corresponding button will cycle between SOS and location. Hold one or both buttons to exit the special modes.

Modes

Cool White Beam:
Turbo: 1100 lumens; 1 hour, 30 minutes run-time; 80 m beam range*
High: 410 lumens; 3 hours, 45 minutes run-time; 49 m beam range
Mid: 200 lumens; 8 hours run-time; 33 m beam range
Low: 70 lumens; 18 hours run-time; 23 m beam range
SOS/Location: 1100 lumens

Warm White Beam:
Turbo: 920 lumens; 1 hour, 30 minutes run-time; 117 m beam range*
High: 370 lumens; 3 hours, 45 minutes run-time; 75 m beam range
Mid: 170 lumens; 8 hours run-time; 46 m beam range
Low: 60 lumens; 18 hours run-time; 31 m beam range
SOS/Location: 920 lumens

Note: *The run-time for turbo is tested with fan cooling, as a simulation of the trail running environment. Only a 21700 or 18650 lithium-ion battery with at least 8 A high discharge current can access turbo.

Tested to ANSI/NEMA FL1 standards in laboratory conditions using a Nitecore 18650 3500 mAh lithium-ion battery. The data may vary slightly in real world use depending on battery type, individual usage habits and environmental factors.

Nitecore UT32

The torch seems to be well designed and hopefully robust, I did not want too many functions for my intended usage, which is mainly for working in unlit areas and confined areas, I have no intention of running anywhere. The light output from this unit is excellent, even the lowest setting is adequate for confined spaces and the soft white option reduces glare. The negatives: Doesn't come with a battery, at that price it should. With the battery installed, it is a little on the heavy side and I found it could move when I was in awkward positions. That aside, a brilliant piece of kit.
