The Coast EAL17 lantern has been updated and now offers a maximum output of 580 lumens of diffused white light (increase of 120 lumens) on the highest output.

As well as low & high white outputs, it also has red light output with two modes of constant on or flashing, which is useful for low light settings or to attract attention in an emergency with the flashing function. The circular push button on the front of the lantern controls all outputs and with each press will cycle through low, high, red, red flashing and off.

It is powered by four D cell batteries and provides an incredible brightness and energy efficiency, with up to 31 hours of run time in the low 300 lumen setting from a single set of alkaline batteries. The dual power function means it can also use rechargeable D cell NiMH batteries, although run-times will differ with this battery type.

A handle rests down the side of the lantern which can be pulled out for easy carrying and there is also a hanging hook attached to the handle so that it can be hung, in a tent for example, to provide area lighting.

Sturdy, Dependable, Long Life.

I ended up buying three to replace my trusty 12 year old standby lamps that had seen better days, and their time had come to go to the lamp graveyard in the sky.
The rated life of these Coast Lamps of 30hrs on the lower (but still bright) setting, on one set of four D Type rechargeable batteries, is virtually double the life of my old ones for the same type of batteries. They are also much brighter than my old ones; the march of technology :)
Tested one out first for brightness and longevity, liked it, and bought two more. I now have these three as my main go-to standby lights together with two combined solar/hand crank ones of another make.
Pleasantly surprised at the speed of dispatch, they arrived (very) quickly, soundly packed. Nice lamps, long life ..... I'm good to go :)

Not used in earnest yet

I have not used the lantern in earnest yet but it seems to be ok and will be useful for using in the event of a power cut for which it was bought. Delivery and packaging was fine. I would have preferred something that was not "made in China" but the whole of the businesss world has imposed this upon us and it is no longer possible to look elsewhere for homegrown products.

Purchased as back up in event of power cuts. Not used much yet. Solidly built. Battery loading was easy (4 D cells). Extremely bright - standard setting bright enough to read by. Service from Torch Direct was excellent, as always. Recommended.
