Fenix WF30RE ATEX Intrinsically Safe LED Torch

The Fenix WF30RE is an intrinsically safe rechargeable torch for use in hazardous locations (excluding underground mines) and it has passed the necessary tests and was certified by IECEx, ATEX, CSA and NEPSI.

Thus this product can be safely used in Zone 1 and Zone 2, where there is explosive gas mixture in classes IIA, IIB and IIC, and the WF30RE is also rated for combustible dust areas; Zone 21 and Zone 22 , such as petroleum, chemical and textile industries, fire controlling, metallurgical areas, electric power stations and areas, paper producing plants, etc.

It uses a Cree XP-G2 LED to provide a maximum output of 280 lumens and also offers two other brightness levels as well as strobe. The light is turned on/off by holding the side button for 0.5 seconds, and once on single presses will cycle through low, mid and high. To access strobe press and hold the button for 1.2 seconds with the light on, and single press to revert back to the last brightness. The intelligent memory function will remember the last used brightness setting next time the light is turned back on.

The body is made from durable high strength and oxidation resistant aluminium, and is IP68 rated which means that this torch is dustproof as well as waterproof and can be submerged underwater up to 2 metres.

Powered by the included Fenix ARB-L21-2600Ex rechargeable lithium-ion battery the WF30RE offers a run-time of 6 hours, 50 minutes on the highest setting. This battery is specifically designed for ATEX use with this torch to safely and reliably withstand extreme conditions, and has passed temperature and explosion-proof tests. The battery also enables the torch to operate in temperatures between -35°c to + 45°c. Do not use any other battery type.

The battery is charged inside the torch, and in order to maintain the intrinsically safe circuit their is a DC charging port in the neck of the torch and the charging cable also has a specialised charging protector block built-in for extra protection. Another safety feature is the secure battery compartment, which can only be accessed using a 8 mm allen wrench to ensure that the battery is securely fitted.

Plug the USB-A end of the cable into the included 3 pin UK mains adaptor and connect to a power source, and the light on the charging protector will flash red/green to show power is connected. The circular jack end then plugs into the port on the neck of the torch underneath the dust cover, and the indictor light will change to red to show charging in progress, and turn green once charging is complete after approximately 5 hours, 30 minutes. Ensure to replace the dust cover after charging to maintain protection, and never charge the torch whilst in a hazardous location.

A built-in battery level indicator displays the battery status for 3 seconds when the button is single pressed with the light off. It will show either a solid green, green flashing, solid red or red flashing light. There is also a low battery voltage warning function that is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level when the voltage drops below the preset level. Once it reaches low output the torch will flash every 10 minutes to remind you to charge your battery.

I'm very happy with this device. Initially I thought the slider mechanism felt a bit flimsy, but I have now worked through my stock of old batteries and everything works well. Amazing little torch

Even through I’d check the dimensions the torch was much smaller than I expected when it arrived. It feels great in hand, very robust and machined to a high standard. Various modes to choose from and when on high it is amazing how much light this tiny torch produces. Run time seems fine so far also. If in doubt, buy it and you won’t regret. As a side note, Torch Direct…. Quick and efficient service. Full marks :)

It’s not a torch.
The MI is the “Military” version.
It flashes IR or green and can be solid IR or green.
The green is very bright and visible.
The IR is 950nm and if you have the right thing also very bright. iPhone can just about see it.

On the lowest level the light is a little green. Much better at the other illumination level. Takes a while to charge through the USB interface. The battery lasts well. Good for walking the dog at night around poorly illuminated roads.

What do I think of my Nitecore EDC27 Slim Rechargeable LED Torch. Ace!

I bought my Nitecore EDC27 Slim Rechargeable LED Torch quite a while ago. It has taken me a while to get to know what this amazing bit of kit can do! Well it's a torch! yes but's it's more than that! Yes I know it can be useful when taking the rubbish out to find the item you dropped out of the bag blah blah. Now I am a bit older & a bit more savvy, I have bought some work trousers with many pockets in them for all the things it seems you need to carry around in life. In the long pocket next to my Biro pen & propelling pencil is my torch with it's lanyard attached. So I always have it with me. I have found it useful in many ways, one of which was when I broke down in my very old car, I knew I would have to wait a long time for recovery, so I looked up on my phone what to do on my phone, while changing the light settings on my torch when I needed to find the problem. I had a Hi Vis jacket on, but i was in the middle of nowhere. So I used the flashing setting when the van got near so he could find me that bit easier. Yes it's still a torch you say, yes, another time I was walking down an alleyway on a short cut home, when out popped some unwanted people who I was unsure of, as I got near them they asked if they could use my phone, with that I selected the brightest mode, shone it in their faces to temporarily blind them & ran as fast as I could. So for me it's more than a torch. Something I hardly ever leave home without, useful when you lift drops his keys in an unlit pub car park in the rain on a very cold night.
Other stuff. I find the small screen that displays various different things invaluable. Especially if you are going out on a cold winters night, has the torch got enough of a charge, well you can check that, the slimness of it also comes in handy when in your best bib & tucker (a suit) you can easily hide it in your inside pocket. How long does it last, a long time, I have put a bit of string on a label for when I charge it, I charge it so infrequently I nearly forget which one it is, I do use it a lot! Cost, yes it's expensive, but you get what you pay for, very good quality. I really recommend it! Mister XR
