The Fenix PD40R V2.0 is a compact rechargeable torch, that still boasts the amazing 3000 lumens output as it's predecessor, but now utilises a different LED, battery and switch design, and throws the beam further.

Equipped with a powerful Luminus SST70 LED and powered by one high capacity 21700 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the Fenix PD40R V2.0 puts out a superb performance with a beam distance of 405 metres in turbo. The overall beam profile delivers a 65° wide area illumination for comfortable use at shorter distances but also has the ability see further with the central hot spot, making it a perfect balance.

The included Fenix 21700 5000 mAh lithium-ion battery charges inside the torch via the USB-C charging port for faster charging. Remove the dust cover from the USB-C port, located on the neck of the torch, and plug the included cable into the torch one end and the other end into a computer/laptop or a suitable USB mains/car adaptor.

The LED charging indicator next to the charging port will go red to indicate charging is in progress and will turn green once charging is complete after approximately 3 hours when charging the included battery.

Four brightness levels of low, mid, high and turbo are available, as well as strobe. Due to the extreme output the turbo output will automatically decrease when the internal temperature of the torch reaches 65°, dropping down to mid to protect the LED from overheating before increasing the brightness again as the torch cools.

Unlike it's predecessor, the PD40R V2.0 does not have a tail switch and instead features a newly designed second generation mechanical rotary switch, which is free from magnetic field interference. The smooth switch allows easy and clear selection of the modes with the four marker lines which get longer in length to correspond with the increase in output and the strobe marker is the last setting indicated by a lightening bolt symbol.

With the anti-slip design you can easily use one hand to rotate the switch to the right to increase brightness or all the way right to access strobe, and then turn it left to decrease the brightness and turn it off. This operation is simple even with heavy duty gloves, and can be done without looking or fumbling around for a button.

The LED next to the charging port is also a battery level indicator and will light up for 3 seconds when the torch is first turned on, with either a green, green flashing, red or red flashing light to show the battery power remaining and notify you when the battery needs charging.

When the voltage of the torch drops below a preset level, the voltage warning function will downshift to a lower brightness level the until the low level is reached, at which point the indicator next to the charging port will flash red to remind you to charge the battery.

Due to the wide range of outputs the PD40R V2.0 is perfect for a range of activities and tasks, making it a great all-rounder.

Product Features

Second generation mechanical rotary switch
Low power warning function and battery level indicator
Overheat protection to protect LED
Inner waterproof USB type C charging port
Reverse polarity protection guards against improper battery installation

Operational Modes

Low: 30 lumens, 88 hours, 10 minutes run-time; 45 m beam range
Mid: 350 lumens, 8 hours, 30 minutes run-time; 137 m beam range
High: 1000 lumens, 3 hours, 10 minutes run-time; 230 m beam range
Turbo: 3000 lumens; 2 hours, 40 minutes run-time; 405 m beam range*
Strobe: 2500 lumens

Note: *The turbo output is measured at total run-time, including output at reduced levels due to temperature or the built-in protection mechanism. The over-heat protection will gradually drop the turbo brightness level into mid brightness level if the internal temperature reaches 65°C.

Tested in laboratory conditions to ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard using 1 x Fenix ARB-L21-5000 21700 lithium-ion rechargeable battery under the temperature of 21±3°C and humidity of 50% - 80%. Results may vary between torch, battery and environments.

Fine torch, nothing to dislike
Thursday, 29 July 2021  |

Really like: the power of the beam, "the sun in a tube" as my son says; the ease of use and ease of switching between modes, much better than some of the "click the base" type torches; simple to charge and good LED indicators when charging and when turned on; comes with a good mesh holder (that I doubt I will ever use in anger).
Dislike: nothing

Great torch with minor problem
Wednesday, 27 January 2021  |

This torch is excellent. Brightness levels are phenomenal. Good size and the rotary switch is easy to operate, even with gloves on. I have had one issue with the torch. It seems to intermittently not change brightness when going from 1000 to 3000 lumens. Even though the torch is cold and fully charged. This has been a very minor issue and has only happened a couple of times. I would still recommend this torch without doubt.

New torch required
Thursday, 14 January 2021  |

I wanted a new torch as my old P7 was starting to look quite dim. I read a number of reviews about the PD40 V2 and I have to say its fantastic. The rotary ring shows which output level is being used and the weight of the torch is nothing. I predominately use this for walking along the local coast and the various outputs are perfect. Brilliant torch highly recommend.

Fenix torch

Service, as always, prompt and efficient. The torch is impressive in light output, but the rotary switch takes some getting used to for one handed operation, especially if you have weak wrists. Once itís turned on, itís relatively easy to switch between light levels. I recommend turning the torch on and off a number of times to loosen up the initial stiffness.

Blown away by performance!
Thursday, 12 November 2020  |

Having reviewed various online videos for this torch, I was sceptical of it living up to its technical claims however, it definitely does what it says on the packet. An expensive torch but well built. Design could incorporate some form of protection for the glass to prevent accidental damage/surface scratches. I feel that the aluminium could extend further past the lens. The provision of a dust cap and cloth which can be used to protect/wipe the glass when not in use would be beneficial. The rotary on/off switch is ideal and works well wearing gloves. Carry holster is robust. Would be good to see the addition of a storage compartment for a spare battery. Talking of spare batteries, although the run time of this torch is excellent, I would always carry a fully charged battery however, at £25.95 I am reluctant to buy. Torch gets hot to touch on the 3000 lumen mode, which I timed at lasting two minutes before power was automatically dropped to the lower setting to prevent overheating - A clever intelligent addition to the torch.

The intensity of the light at 1000 and 3000 lumens is insane. Although there is quite a bit of flood from the beam, not much of a spot light. Iíd like to compare this against the spotlight and floodlight functions of the the Fenix HP30R head torch which has a maximum output of 1750 lumens combined. Only negative comment on the PD40R v2.0 is that it doesnít have a great spotlight over long or short distance.

If your postcode is not part of the Mainland UK for postal purposes then we will determine the best way to send your item(s) and in some cases we may have to cancel the order or offer an alternative solution, this is because Royal Mail and couriers have strict rules regarding the transport of lithium batteries and in the case of couriers certain regions of the UK have increased shipping costs.
