The Fenix LR40R is a high performance rechargeable searchlight that delivers a maximum output of 12000 lumens and a beam range of 773 when the separate flood light and spot light are combined.
The Central Cree XP-L HI LED provides a spotlight than can reach up to 640 metres with a maximum output of 1000 lumens in the high setting. Surrounding the central LED are 18 Cree XP-G3 LEDs that provide flood lighting with a maximum output of 11000 lumens and a beam range of 410 metres on the turbo setting. The spot and flood lighting are controlled separately and can be used individually or combined, however the spot cannot be used at the same time as the strobe or SOS.
Two buttons are located on the body of the torch with the left hand flood button controlling flood outputs as well as strobe and SOS, while the right hand spot button controls the spotlight outputs. Press and hold the floodlight button for 0.5 seconds to turn the light on and then each press will cycle through low, mid, high I, high II and turbo. Press and hold the spotlight button for 0.5 seconds to turn the light on and then each press will cycle through eco, low, mid and high. Press and hold the floodlight button for 1.2 seconds in any state to access the strobe, then single press to change to SOS and press once more to return to the previously used setting.
Holding the flood button for 0.5 seconds will turn the flood light off and holding the spot button for 0.5 seconds will turn the spot light off. If both spot and flood are on, press and hold the spot for 1.2 seconds to turn both lights off together. The last used setting will be remembered next time the light is turned on.
To prevent accidental activation the LR40R has a lockout function. To access the lockout, with the lamp turned off, press and hold both buttons for 3 seconds and the eco will blink twice to show it is in lockout. Press both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to unlock the light.
The LR40R is powered by the included ARB-L37-12000 lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack or it can also use one to four 18650 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in an emergency situation, however the less batteries used the lower the outputs available will be. The included battery pack is charged inside the torch via the USB Type-C charging port, which is located on the neck of the torch, and QC3.0 / QC2.0 fast protocol or 5 V adaptor charging methods are supported. Lift the dust cover and plug in the USB Type-C cable at one end and plug the standard USB-A end into a USB port or a USB adaptor. The four charging indicators that sit above the two buttons will gradually illuminate until all four are solid to show charging is complete.
The four LED indicators also light up when either button is pressed when the light is off when using the included battery pack. Four LEDs is 80-100% power, three LEDs is 60-80% power, two LEDs is 40-60% power, one LED is 20-40% and one flashing LED is less than 20% power and the torch should be charged as soon as possible when at this stage.
To avoid overheating the torch has two types of inbuilt protection. The temperature protection will lower the output of the torch if the temperature reaches 65°C or above when using turbo, high II and high I. The timed downshift will reduce the output after 2 minutes constant use in the turbo output and reduce the output after 5 minutes use in the high II output. It will reduce to 1000 lumens if the spot high mode is also being used, or 1500 lumens if it is just the flood being used.
