BioLite AlpenGlow 250 Rechargeable LED Camping Lantern

£59.94

The BioLite AlpenGlow 250 rechargeable lantern delivers ambient and task-based lighting, all inspired by nature.

Like no other lantern we've seen before, this compact light offers 8 different modes, making it as multi-functional as they come. Select between cool white light, warm white light, multicoloured light, single colour light, warm candle flicker, multicolour party, single colour cycling and single panel lighting.

Warm white mode uses BioLite's ChromaReal LED technology that is useful for applications where complete and accurate lighting is important. ChromaReal has a Colour-Rendering Index (CRI) of 90 or higher, which is a measure of how full-spectrum the emitted light is and how true colours will appear. When using at night, ChromaReal helps colours pop, textures stand out, and finishes have more depth and luster. This can really come in handy for things like night time cooking, reading and photography.

The lantern can be controlled in three ways to customise and select the mode you want to use. Firstly, single presses will cycle through the main modes of cool white, warm white, single colour, multicolour and off. Once one of the four main modes have been selected, you can then use press and hold of the button, or the internal accelerometer which is activated with an up and down shake motion to access further lighting modes.

In cool white mode you can dim the output between 250 lumens and 2.5 lumens to reach the perfect output by pressing and holding the button down, and it will flash when it reaches the highest or lowest point. Also in this setting you can enter the single panel mode for 180° lighting on one side of the lantern by shaking it up and down. This is especially useful for when you need lower level directional lighting, and the brightness can still be dimmed with a press and hold in the single panel mode.

For warm white mode the press and hold will dim the brightness in the same way as cool white, but the difference in this mode is that the shake motion will instead access the warm candle flicker mode. This gives a low level lighting that mimics a candle flicker to provide an ambient atmosphere.

In single colour mode the output will be a solid colour on the available spectrum (blue, purple, pink, red, orange yellow & green), and this colour can be changed by holding down the button and releasing on the desired colour. If you don't want to choose just one colour, you can shake the lantern to enter the single colour cycling mode that will continuously go through each colour. Once in single colour cycling mode you can also change the speed it cycles through by holding down the button and releasing when the lantern shows red for slow, yellow for medium or green for fast.

Lastly is the multicolour mode, which display two different complimentary colours on each side of the lantern. To change the colours press and hold the button to cycle through and release the button at the desired colour combination. If instead you want the multicolour panels to cycle through all the light combinations, simply give the lantern a shake for a multicolour party. Again as with single colour mode, you can change the speed of the cycling.

A lockout function prevents accidental activation in transit and the AlpenGlow 250 is put into lockout mode by holding the button down for 8 seconds while the light is off until the light blinks twice. To exit lockout mode repeat the process again, and the light will blink once.

The integrated 3200 mAh lithium-ion battery can be charged by lifting the dust cover on the back to reveal the micro USB port. Then simply plug the included micro USB cable into the charging port and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The four charging indicators on the front will flash and become solid in turn, until eventually all four lights are solid to indicate a full charge after approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes. Remove the cable and ensure the dust cover is properly replaced to maintain the IPX4 water resistance rating.

Also featured is the power bank ability of the lantern, which can be used to charge external USB devices on the go by connection to the standard USB-A port of the lantern, although note that this will reduce the power and therefore the run-time of the lantern.

A low level battery warning will flash four times to warn that you are about to enter low power mode, and will then drop the brightness to cool or warm white low mode. Once low power mode is entered it will have 1 hour run-time left, and simply charge up the lantern to be able to exit this mode. This is useful for when you may be away from a power source, as it does not leave you completely in the dark. The four indicators will display the battery power for three seconds when the light is first turn on, and again when it is turned off.

On the base of the AlpenGlow 250 there is a metal hanging hook tucked away, so you can easily pull this out and put it up inside the tent or hang from a structure outside, which works well for camping.
